What Does “Fintech with a Soul” Really Mean?

By Logan Lemberger, Head of Global Financial Partnerships, MassPay

At MassPay, we’ve always said we’re building Fintech with a Soul.

It’s not a tagline we borrowed. It’s how we think about every payout, every partnership, and every market we enter.

In a world obsessed with speed, scale, and quarterly growth, fintech can easily become transactional. Move money faster. Reduce cost. Expand globally. Those things matter — we care deeply about efficiency and performance. But we believe something is missing if that’s all you focus on.

Because behind every payout is a person.

Start with the Human Being

For us, “Fintech with a Soul” starts with a simple question:

What does this feel like for the person receiving the money?

In too many legacy systems, the experience is frustrating or even demeaning — long waits, unnecessary fees, complicated steps, or a trip across town just to access funds. For someone living paycheck to paycheck, that delay isn’t an inconvenience. It’s stress. It’s uncertainty. It’s real life.

So we design differently.

When clients move from multi-day ACH to real-time payments (RTP), they’re not just upgrading infrastructure. They’re eliminating the single most common support ticket in payouts: “Where’s my money?”

Instant availability and defined expectations reduce anxiety for recipients and decreases inbound support for our clients. That’s operational efficiency — but it’s also empathy in action.

Honor Local Reality

A soulful approach to global payouts means recognizing that payment preferences aren’t random — they’re cultural, historical, and deeply personal.

In parts of the former Soviet Union, distrust of government-linked institutions still influences how people interact with banks. In countries like the Dominican Republic or Vietnam, home delivery of cash isn’t outdated — it’s preferred. In other regions, digital wallets dominate.

You can’t impose a one-size-fits-all payout model and call it innovation.

At MassPay, we build flexible global networks because respecting local preference isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s essential. If you ignore the sociological reality of how people manage money, you’re not building fintech with a soul. You’re just exporting your own assumptions.

Profitability — With Purpose

Let’s be clear: having a soul doesn’t mean ignoring profitability. We are a business. Our partners are businesses. Sustainable companies create lasting impact.

But we believe there’s a cost to prioritizing profit above all else.

When we find efficiencies — in FX, in rails, in settlement structures — we believe those savings should be shared. In many markets, even small differences in fees or exchange rates have a meaningful impact for recipients. What counts as a few dollars in savings in one country could mean something vastly different in another.

Success, for us, isn’t just a revenue chart trending upward. It’s knowing that the people at the end of the payout experience feel respected, not squeezed.

A Real-World Example: Stablecoins and Local Demand

Take stablecoins outside the U.S.

In countries like India and Brazil, currency volatility makes USD-denominated assets highly attractive. But opening a U.S. dollar bank account isn’t simple. Stablecoins like USDC and USDT have become an accessible alternative store of value.

We’ve structured partnerships where we fund in stablecoin, and our local partner distributes in local currency. Because there is strong local demand for dollar-denominated assets, that stablecoin supply itself holds value.

It works because it’s built around local financial reality. We’re not forcing a structure; we’re responding to demand. That’s what happens when you start with understanding rather than assumptions.

Every Payment Is Human

At MassPay, “Fintech with a Soul” isn’t a campaign. It’s our operating philosophy.

It means:

  • Designing for dignity, not just cost
  • Respecting cultural context, not just scaling technology
  • Sharing value, not just extracting margin
  • Building compliance protocols that are thoughtful and logical
  • Remembering that every transaction touches someone’s life

The future of fintech won’t be defined solely by faster rails or new assets. It will be defined by whether we use those tools to create systems that feel fair, accessible, and humane.

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to at MassPay.

Because moving money is technical.

But paying people is human.
